The spectre of a protectionist US administration retaliating against the proposal for an EU digital tax which would hit some of the US's largest firms, was raised by an MEP on Tuesday.

The potential threat was discussed during an exchange between Pierre Moscovici, the European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, and MEPs from the Economics Committee and the newly-created Special Committee on Financial Crimes (TAX3). A digital tax on big tech firms is not an anti-US tax, according to Moscovici.
